Modern technology will surely be the demise of the human race. By not waiting for anything longer than a nanosecond, instant destruction will be insisted upon from the masses. Sure, we will be warned but no one likes being told what to do. Klaus Kinski didn’t like being told what to do.
A free spirit who rallied against authority, the intelligentsia or in fact anyone who used the word ‘no’ in a sentence. Kinski demanded to be left alone whilst turning up to so many film sets, he rarely had time to read the script. A tortured soul who was destined to entertain regardless of good taste or his own sanity. He had a lot to say and his lack of self-censorship meant he said it all. A cursory glance at his autobiography “Kinski Uncut” quickly dispels any concern that he would be coy. Had twitter existed back when he was alive, the possibilities are mind-boggling. I say this rather than Kinski being alive today, as I suspect the level of fantastical inanity that engulfs our modern culture would be too much for even him. Armed with a twitter account, Kinski’s bridge-burning outbursts would have made for interesting reading.
For example:
had a 3 day (insert any of the following: orgy, fistfight, imprisonment). Boy, I am beat. Why am I made to please my (insert any of the following: relatives, director, producer)?
Kinski’s decision to turn down a juicy role in Raiders of the Lost Ark was not one of ill-judged foresight. Rather, Spielberg offered less money than another Italian/French/Spanish/Norwegian etc (dubbing made the country of origin a mute point) film that dealt with murder, sex and general creepiness. Almost by accident, Kinski occasionally found himself on the set of a great movie (Dr. Zhivago) but more often than not he appeared to weigh a script rather than reading it. More words to say meant more money. Had he agreed to Raiders, Kinski would have undoubtedly been given more lines than Harrison Ford and rightfully claimed to be the star. Which he would have done anyway. If Kinski were alive today he could have reaped the benefits of the Indiana Jones series continuing into the future until Ford’s body gives up. Which is never. I have a theory …
